Fire Alarm Specialists

We offer Fire Alarm system design, installation, commissioning and maintenance services to businesses across the UK from our base in the south east.

An effective fire alarm system is a key element in preventing a small fire turning into a disaster. For us, fire alarms are much more than just a compliance tool. An effective fire alarm will alert you quickly and accurately, allowing you to direct first responders to the fire location so it can be dealt with early.

When used in conjunction with well-placed fire extinguishers, staff fire training and emergency plans, the fire alarm considerably reduces the likelihood that your business will be crippled by a major fire. We have many years experience in helping our clients find the right fire alarm solution. Whether it is the initial design, system maintenance or full installation – we have the knowledge and experience to deliver a first class solution for you. We work with clients in small offices to a 600 bedroom hotel or large industrial site – we can ensure that the whole project is managed seamlessly.

We work on a huge and diverse range of fire alarm systems every day. Manufacturers we can service and support for regular maintenance include the likes of Advanced, Fireclass, C-Tec, Protec, Gent, Kentec, Ziton, Chubb, ADT, Minerva, Rafiki, Morley and many more. We’re able to ensure that the system is properly tested and maintained in line with the requirements of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

We work to the highest standards within our industry – but don’t just take our word for it. Our Silver standard accreditation with NSI for fire systems and our SP203-1 accreditation with BAFE ensure that we remain on our toes all year round. We can be externally audited on any job at any time – so the standards we work to must remain consistently high – every time, without fail in order to maintain our accreditations.

Fire Alarm Standards and Compliance

Emytec work strictly in accordance to the British standards. The current standard for Fire Alarm Systems in the UK is BS5839:2017, which has recently replaced BS5839:2013. There are two main reasons for having a Fire Alarm installed, Life protection and Property protection.

Life systems are categorised as (L) type systems with the exception of manual systems which are (M) type.

Property systems are categorised as (P) type systems, these are designed to protect buildings and stock.

Life systems can be designed for both commercial and residential use, the British Standard has different requirements for each of these. Commercial systems must comply to BS5839:2017 Part 1, and Residential to Part 6 of the standard, the biggest difference between these standards are the sound level requirements, although this is not the only difference.

Fire Maintenance and Monitoring

Since the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order in 2005, it has become a mandatory requirement that all Fire Alarm systems are serviced at least twice a year, with one hundred percent of the system being checked over the 12 month period.

All Fire Alarms must be supported with a minimum 24 hour stand by life in the event of a power failure, and have sufficient battery capacity to run the sounders for 30 minutes after this time. For systems that are off site monitored further changes have now been implemented. The latest revision to the fire alarm standards is BS5839:2017, this has enforced further requirements for off site monitored systems.

All Communicators and associated power supplies for off site monitoring must now be EN54 compliant. The new fire alarm standard that came into force in September 2017 now allows for the connection of fire alarms through intruder alarms provided the intruder alarm communicator is EN54 graded. If Intruder Alarm assisted monitoring is used a variation form may be required and signed by the customer, agreeing to any none conformity that may be present.

Most monitored Fire Alarm Systems can be set up with brigade response, although not all authorities will guarantee to attend an activation unless a fire has been confirmed.

Types of Fire Systems and Detection

Fire detection systems are there to protect life and or property, but in most circumstances lives. For this reason it is very important that the company you choose are fire systems competent. When it come to protecting peoples lives, you need to take more than a companies word, that they have the knowledge and ability to design and install a compliant system, and provide a competent service, you need assurance.

In the fire industry the only way to prove competence is to be a member of an approved industry organisation, they will annually inspect the company to ensure that they comply with and adhere to the current legislation. Some companies may claim competence but if they are not annually inspected, this cannot be proved.
